A Rush for No Good Reason
(Continued)
That this happens from time to time in private enterprises is sad enough. But when it occurs in a municipality, it is a cut on the whole concept of good governance. Civil discourse and debate in matters of local significance are vital to local spirit and local democracy. The expedited pace of the consolidation process and the prospect that so many residents will be confronted with a referendum on consolidation on the ballot on November 3rd when they have not been adequately apprised of the arguments for and against it have made me take a big step backwards and ask, “Why are we doing this?”
There is no crisis. Supervisor Rogers, himself, has commented that the balance sheets of both municipalities are sound. Surely, such a momentous action as dissolving a healthy village that has existed for 147 years deserves a better process, broader public debate and more community outreach than the seven of ten board members have judged that it merits.
